Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)
If you drive a diesel vehicle, you may wonder when the Diesel Exhaust Fluid needs services.
How DEF Level Service Works
Most modern diesel vehicles are equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, which uses DEF to reduce Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) exhaust emissions from diesel engines. A liquid composed of 67.5% deionized water and 32.5% urea, DEF creates a chemical reaction in the catalytic converter that turns the NOx into water and nitrogen, significantly reducing NOx and PM emissions and slightly improving fuel economy.
How to Check the DEF Level
You should always refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to check your vehicle’s DEF level. Most modern diesel engines allow you to check your DEF level by accessing your dashboard panel. You may also get a warning light on your dashboard that indicates low DEF levels.
How Often for Service
DEF service is dependent on many variables, including vehicle load, speed, distance driven, and idling time. Jiffy Lube® recommends following manufacturer recommendations, where applicable, for maintenance schedules and service intervals.
